Things to Consider Before the End of the Year

As we approach the close of 2025, take some time to reflect on our checklist of essential tasks. There’s nothing quite like a deadline to inspire action, so being proactive in your financial planning is crucial. However, with stocks priced for perfection across multiple metrics, the question remains: can reality keep pace with market expectations?

  • Lake Financial was a sponsor for the PWHS Booster Club Alumni Golf Outing. We donated the prize for the “Closest to the hole” competition, which included a cooler backpack and 4 large insulated tumblers with the Pirate logo engraved on them.
  • Paul took part in the Variety Golf Outing held in Lake Geneva. Variety - the Children’s Charity of Wisconsin, has been around since 1935 raising money to support children with physical or developmental special needs, and their families, throughout Wisconsin.
  • LFG sponsored Port Washington’s Lion’s Fest again this year.
  • We were a proud sponsor of Fishday again this year. The event was a huge success, with three days of fish & chips, live music, the parade, and a spectacular fireworks show.
  • Jason and his family, who regularly volunteer through the Lion’s Club Greendale Chapter, helped run the food tent at the Air & Water show in Milwaukee.
  • We were a sponsor again for the annual Duffy Golf Outing, which raises money for Port Washington’s wrestling programs from youth through high school.
  • We hosted our annual client Open House at the beginning of September. The event was open to the public and featured live music, food and drinks, and time to meet all of the advisors and staff. We gave away 14 gift baskets as well, filled with items from local businesses. 
  • We were a sponsor for Port Washington Main Street’s new fall planter event. The event is new this year, encouraging businesses to sponsor a fall planter to decorate their storefront for the season.
  • John, founder of the Milwaukee Mounted Patrol, took part in a fundraiser for Officer Corder, who was killed on duty in June.
  • Brad and Brian have been volunteering their time to coach football for 1st and 5th graders this year.
  • LFG was a sponsor for the Random Lake Fireworks 4th of July Beach Bash Celebration on July 12th.
  • We purchased mini footballs to be thrown out at both the Random Lake - Ozaukee and Port Washington high school football games for the 2025 season. The footballs were customized with the school logos as well as our own.
  • Paul spent time teaching sailing for students through the Milwaukee Sailing Center in August.

  • Get a head start on college funding! You can begin filing your FAFSA for the 2026-2027 school year starting October 1st. Keep in mind that some colleges award aid on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • If you requested a six-month extension on your income tax return back in April, ensure it is filed by October 15th.
  • The deadline to notify if you plan to transfer a Simple IRA to a 401(k) is October 31st.


November

  • November 1st marks the opening day for enrollment in the federal health insurance marketplace for 2026 coverage. Take this opportunity to review your health insurance and other employer benefits.
  • Student loans typically begin repayment six months after graduation. If you or your child graduated in May, payments may be due soon.

    December
  • *Get ready for the 8th year of our Christmas Lights Competition* Nominations can be submitted to our website, tour maps and voting begins Friday, December 12th!
  • The deadline for 401(k) plans to announce their intentions regarding the 2026 Safe Harbor provision is December 1, 2025.
  • Check your annual Social Security Statement. Ensure your earnings record matches your previous tax returns for accuracy.
  • Remember that the deadline for Required Minimum Distributions for retirement accounts is December 31st.
    • Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs): If you are 73 or older, you are mandated to take RMDs annually from pre-tax retirement accounts by December 31st, or by April 15th of the following year for your first RMD.
    • Consider a Charitable Donation! A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) allows for a direct transfer of funds from your IRA to a qualified charity. This amount can count towards your RMD for the year, up to $100,000, and is excluded from your taxable income.
